The Qilin Tattoo is a tattoo designed after the mythical creature Qilin. The tattoo is usually associated with the main Zhang Family. It only appears when the body reaches a certain temperature. This article was originally written in March 2020 for Chung’s exhibition “The Narrow Road to The Deep Sea” [1] at Foo Tak building in Hong Kong. I still remember that I was deeply moved immediately at the exhibition, also afterwards as I returned to my reflections while writing. After being invited to adapt this article for HB Station Art Research Center’s exhibition, half a year had slipped away due to my procrastination. Since then, I have moved out from the sub-divided small room in Sham Shui Po, lived in a short rental on Lantau Island, sojourned at a friend’s house in Yuen Long and I am now at a quarantine hotel in Dongguan. Amidst the pandemic, physical mobility and mental preparation have become harder and harder, to the point that once all the travelling was done, it seemed to be rather commendable. When the itinerary and cycles are foreseeable, the future happenings become more of curiosity instead of fear. This makes me think of Chung’s works more complex, with this contrast of past and present kept in mind. He brought life stories which endured forced migration and imprisonment to sight, until their last shred of vitality withered away.
